Women’s Health

Every woman should have access to the most trusted and reliable health information. Knowledge of their legal rights when is comes to health care and coverage particular to women’s issues is  also a critical part of empowering women and girls  to make the best decisions to maintain and improve their health and the health of their families.

Through all stages of their lives, the CWLC protects the rights of women with health concerns and provides necessary resources to help them make the right choices for their needs and lifestyle.

California Work and Family Coalition

The California Women’s Law Center is a member of the California Work and Family Coalition, a diverse coalition of advocates, community groups and labor unions that promotes family friendly workplace policies for California’s working families through policy work and grassroots activism.  Working families have fundamental rights to financially sustain and to care for themselves and their loved ones. With the Coalition, CWLC supports policies that help California workers preserve their jobs and fulfill their care-giving responsibilities.

Rights of Breastfeeding Mothers

Breastfeeding in public is not a crime.  In California, a mother may breastfeed her child in almost any location, public or private.  Further, employers must provide a reasonable amount of break time to accommodate breastfeeding employees, and must make reasonable efforts to provide the employee with some room – other than a toilet stall – to express milk in private.  CWLC works to ensure that breastfeeding mothers know their rights, and works to defend breastfeeding mothers’ legal rights.

Breast Cancer

In 1995, the California Women’s Law Center established the Breast Cancer Legal Project, the first state-wide provider of free education, outreach, materials and technical assistance to women with breast cancer and their advocates. The Project worked with organizations, breast cancer survivor and advocacy groups, and legal and medical professionals to allow women with breast cancer to focus their energy on recover. As part of this project, CWLC created a comprehensive legal resource guide to provide background information on the laws protecting women with breast cancer in California.
